Sujit Choudhry Offers a Helping Hand to Spain and Catalonia

The dispute that has been between Catalonia and Spain attracted the attention of legal experts lead by Sujit Choudhry. The constitutional law scholars wrote a letter to the two governments urging them to have an open mind while discussing secession matter that affects both of them in equal measure. They asked the President Puigdemont of Catalonia to arrange for a referendum to prove his commitment of secession issue. They also requested Spanish prime minister to understand and accept the will of the majority of Catalonians.

The scholars in their open latter advised that the two sides needed to have a round-table talk to come to a constitutional agreement. The attempt by Spain to suppress referendum process was not well received by the scholars who argued that the whole process needed to be done peacefully and orderly.

Sujit Choudhry with his team cautioned Mr. Rajoy to avoid arresting those who come out to support the secession of Catalonia; they said that the act is a human right abuse. The actions by Spanish government has led to the situation worsening and making it pretty hard for Spain to rule the area peacefully without involving any form of violence. The scholars are of the opinion of Mr. Rajoy stopping to be so harsh when handing the Catalonian people. The best way for the two parties is to have a dialogue with an open mind and discuss the wish of Catalans.
